Carolina del Sud, 1776.
Benjamin Martin, un eroe del conflitto franco-indiano, ha rinunciato per sempre alla
guerra per dedicarsi in santa pace alla famiglia. Sebbene sia stato un tempo un soldato
scaltro e feroce, dopo aver sposato una brava donna e aver avuto sette figli, ha
seppellito il proprio passato violento e ha dato inizio ad una tranquilla esistenza da

| Gabriel, il figlio maggiore, non condivide i
dubbi del padre. La guerra s'avvicina, e la causa per cui ci si prepara a combattere è
giusta. In barba al padre, Gabriel si unisce ai combattimenti. Da parte sua, Benjamin
Martin non riesce a decidere sul da farsi e per quanto si opponga risolutamente al
conflitto, non può fare a meno di condividere gli ideali dei ribelli. Finché gli
inglesi, capeggiati dal crudele Colonnello Tavington, arrivano alla sua porta e minacciano
quel che ha di più caro al mondo: la sua famiglia. Vedendo la propria casa in pericolo,
Martin accetta di imbracciare le armi assieme al figlio patriota e di capeggiare una
coraggiosa milizia contro forze britanniche implacabili e schiaccianti. Nel corso degli

| South Carolina, 1776. A former hero of the French and
Indian War, Benjamin Martin has renounced fighting forever to raise his family in peace.
Although once a wily efficient and ferocious soldier, he marries a fine woman who bears
him seven children and, under her influence, trades his violent past for a peaceful future
on his sprawling plantation. But rebellion is brewing. Another conflict, this time with
England, is inevitable. A dedicated family man, Martin is not anxious to return to battle.
Recently widowed, he has different goals now. He is the sole caretaker of his brood, and
the horrors of past combat haunt him still. Benjamin’s eldest son, Gabriel, harbours
no such doubts. War is coming, and the cause, he feels, is just. In defiance of his
father, Gabriel joins the fight. |
Benjamin is conflicted
– as stalwart as he is in his opposition to the war, he believes in the cause. Then
the British, led by the cruel Colonel Tavington, arrive at his doorstep and endanger the
one thing he holds most dear – his family. With his South Carolina household
threatened, Martin agrees to take up arms alongside his idealistic patriot son and lead a
brave rebel militia into battle against a relentless and overwhelming English army. In the
process, this reluctant hero discovers that the only way to protect his family is to fight
for a young nation’s freedom.
