| Ben, simpatico nevrotico in cerca
d’amore, assiste da due anni alla fantastica storia d'amore tra il suo migliore amico
Phil, e Maryann, la donna di cui lui è innamorato. Quando Phil decide di trasferirsi in
Australia, quel rapporto così "perfetto" comincia a disintegrarsi. Maryann
chiede a Ben di aiutarli, ma più tempo passano insieme, più Ben si sente attratto da
lei. La vita di Ben viene ulteriormente complicata dalla sua attrazione verso Aleo, una
bellissima studentessa brasiliana che sembra incarnare tutte le sue fantasie. Aleo è
anche la migliore amica di Wendy, l'ex ragazza di Ben. Nel tentativo di scoprire di più
su Aleo, Ben cerca di abbattere le barriere di Wendy, respingendo allo stesso tempo le
avances indesiderate di Trish, una collega di Phil. Anche per Richard, il coinquilino di
Ben, le cose non vanno molto lisce. Innamorato di Wendy, cova un odio profondo nei
confronti di Iain, il nuovo fidanzato della ragazza. Ogni suo tentativo di apparire
superiore a Iain ha esiti inevitabilmente imbarazzanti e disastrosi. |

For the last two years Ben, a
likeable neurotic who fantasizes about being in love, has watched his best friend Phil
have a sickeningly fantastic relationship with Maryann, the woman Phil snatched from under
his nose. When Phil says he’s moving to Australia, this "perfect"
relationship starts to fall apart. Maryann asks Ben to fix things up. Unfortunately the
more time Ben spends with Maryann, the more he’s attracted to her.
Ben’s life is complicated by his attraction to Aleo, a beautiful but oblivious
Brazilian exchange student who seems to fulfil all his fantasies. But Aleo is best friends
with Ben’s ex-girlfriend Wendy. Ben tries to break through Wendy’s defences in
an attempt to find out more about Aleo, while simultaneously dealing with the unwanted
advances of Trish, one of Phil’s workmates.
Weaving in and out of these two love triangles is the story of Richard and Iain. Richard
is Ben’s flatmate, a deranged university student who develops a hatred for Mr.
Perfect Iain, Wendy’s new boyfriend. Richard’s attempts to prove his superiority
to Iain consistently end in failure and embarrassment. |

STEPHEN HICKEY
Cresciuto sulla costa di Kapiti, Stephen Hickey si trasferisce a Wellington nel
1991 e, nel 1995, si laurea in Psicologia e Filosofia all'Università del Victoria. I due
anni che seguono li divide fra il suo lavoro temporaneo di imprenditore e un crescente
interesse verso la regia e la scrittura. A quattro mani scrive e dirige The Fridge,
una commedia per il Bats Theatre di Wellington. E’ il 1997 l’anno in cui Hikey
decide di dedicarsi esclusivamente alla scrittura. Hopeless segna il suo debutto
cinematografico.
Stephen Hickey is 27 years old. Hopeless
is his first feature film. After growing up on the Kapiti coast, Hickey moved to
Wellington in 1991. He graduated from Victoria University in 1995, with an Honours degree
in Psychology and a BA in Philosophy. Over the next two years he divided his time between
working as a temporary contractor, and a growing interest in writing and directing. He
co-wrote and co-directed a comedy called The Fridge for Bats Theatre in Wellington.
At the end of 1997, Hickey decided to write screenplays full-time.
